The history of Saint John the Baptist Parish


Until 1840, German-speaking Catholics in Pottsville had monthly Mass said by a Jesuit priest, Father Nicholas Steinbacher who rode on horseback from Reading to hold services in the basement of St. Patrick´s Churchlink opens in new window. Available records do not say when Father Steinbacher began his visits, which he alternated with trips to Lebanon, Elizabethtown and Gettysburg, but they ended when his horse broke a leg during one of his trips to Pottsville.

Spring is housecleaning time, so look around your homes for any items you wish to contribute. You´d be surprised what you might find.

Clean Items Only No empty plastic containers -- Here are some suggestions:

ITEMS CAN BE DROPPED OFF AT THE RUSSELL BUILDING ON THE FOLLOWING DATES ONLY
Wednesday July 2 7 to 8 p.m.
Wednesday July 9 7 to 8 p.m.
Saturday July 12 9 to 11 a.m.
NO ITEMS WILL BE ACCEPTED BEFORE OR AFTER THESE DATES.
DO NOT LEAVE ARTICLES AT THE DOOR OR IN THE PARKING LOT.

Weekend Mass

  • Saturdays: 5:15 p.m. (Note: Beginning July 19th, Saturday Mass will be at 5:00 p.m.)
  • Sundays: 8:15 & 10:30 a.m.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

  • Saturdays: 5:00 to 5:15 p.m. (Note: Beginning July 19th, Saturday Reconciliation will be from 4:30 - 4:45 p.m.)
  • Sundays 7:45 to 8:00 a.m. & 10:00 to 10:15 a.m.
